ChargeZone and Fresh Bus Scale to 500 Electric Buses with 40 MW of Charging Capacity

Table of Contents

India’s electric intercity bus market is entering a new phase of scale as ChargeZone and Fresh Bus expand their partnership to support 500 electric buses with 40 MW of dedicated charging capacity.

Announced on August 18, 2026, the expansion will add 400 all-electric buses to the 100 Fresh Bus vehicles already supported by ChargeZone’s charging network.

According to Autocar Professional, the project represents a major expansion of electric intercity bus infrastructure in southern India.

400 New Electric Buses and 30 MW of Additional Charging Capacity

ChargeZone will deploy an additional 30 MW of charging capacity, supplementing approximately 10 MW already dedicated to Fresh Bus operations.

This will bring total dedicated charging capacity to around 40 MW.

Over the next phase of expansion, the electric bus network is expected to connect multiple cities and towns across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The project demonstrates how charging infrastructure is becoming one of the most important enabling technologies behind large-scale commercial fleet electrification.

Electric Bus Expansion Is Changing the Role of Charging Infrastructure

Charging a private electric vehicle is relatively flexible. A vehicle may remain parked for several hours or overnight, meaning that a delayed charging session often has little impact on the owner’s next journey.

Electric buses operate very differently.

Every vehicle has a defined timetable, route, expected mileage and minimum battery requirement before departure.

When hundreds of buses operate across multiple routes, the charging system must continuously determine:

  • which vehicle should charge first;
  • how much energy each bus requires;
  • when charging must be completed;
  • how much power each charger should receive;
  • whether total charging demand exceeds site capacity;
  • how charging priorities should respond to changes in fleet schedules.

This means large electric bus fleets require much more than physical charging equipment.

They increasingly require smart charging orchestration, fleet scheduling and energy management.

40 MW of Charging Requires Intelligent Power Management

A charging network operating at tens of megawatts of installed capacity creates a significant energy-management challenge.

If too many electric buses charge at maximum power simultaneously, fleet depots can create substantial demand peaks and increase both grid connection requirements and electricity costs.

Smart charging software can dynamically distribute power according to vehicle requirements, operating schedules and site capacity.

For example, a bus scheduled to depart in 30 minutes may receive higher charging power, while another vehicle with several hours before departure can charge at a lower rate or begin charging later.

This enables fleet operators to align energy use with operational priorities rather than relying on a basic first-come, first-served charging model.

India Is Becoming a Major Electric Bus Charging Market

The ChargeZone and Fresh Bus expansion also reflects the rapid development of India’s commercial EV ecosystem.

As electric intercity bus services expand across more routes, operators will require strategically located high-power charging hubs, higher charger availability and increasingly sophisticated digital fleet coordination.

Charging reliability will become directly connected to vehicle availability and passenger service performance.

From Charger Deployment to Fleet Energy Operations

The industry is gradually shifting from the question of “How many chargers should be installed?” toward a more important operational question:

How can an entire electric fleet be charged reliably, economically and on schedule?

At large scale, the value of charging infrastructure increasingly depends on how effectively charging hardware, electric vehicles, route schedules, grid capacity and operational data are coordinated.

For charging operators, software providers and electric fleet managers, the Fresh Bus expansion provides a clear example of where the commercial EV charging market is heading.
