In simple terms, OCPI makes EV charging roaming possible.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">When a driver uses one charging app to charge at another operator\u2019s charging station, multiple systems need to exchange data in the background. The app needs to know where the chargers are, whether they are available, what connector types they support, how much charging will cost, whether the driver is allowed to start a session, and how the final charging record should be sent for billing and settlement.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This is exactly where OCPI fits.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Many teams entering the EV charging industry confuse OCPI with OCPP or ISO 15118. These protocols are related, but they solve different problems. <a href=\"https:\/\/trendpowercharge.com\/th\/ocpp-1-6-vs-2-0-1-vs-2-1-ev-charging-software\/\">OCPP mainly handles communication between EV chargers and the backend system<\/a>. ISO 15118 focuses on communication between the electric vehicle and the charging equipment, including Plug and Charge use cases. OCPI focuses on communication between different business networks, especially between Charge Point Operators and e-Mobility Service Providers.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">If OCPP connects the charger to the backend, OCPI connects one charging business ecosystem to another.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For any company planning to build public charging networks, white-label charging apps, roaming partnerships, payment integrations, or multi-operator charging platforms, OCPI is one of the most important protocols to understand.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div contenteditable=\"false\">\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>OCPI \u0e40\u0e17\u0e35\u0e22\u0e1a\u0e01\u0e31\u0e1a OCPP \u0e40\u0e17\u0e35\u0e22\u0e1a\u0e01\u0e31\u0e1a ISO 15118<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Before going deeper into OCPI, it is useful to separate the roles of the three major EV charging protocols.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>OCPP: Charger-to-Backend Communication<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">OCPP, or Open Charge Point Protocol, is used between the charging station and the central management system. It allows the backend to monitor charger status, start or stop sessions, receive meter values, manage firmware updates, handle remote commands, and maintain charger operations.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For a CPO, OCPP is the foundation of charger control.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>ISO 15118: Vehicle-to-Charger Communication<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ISO 15118 is used between the EV and the charging equipment. It supports advanced vehicle-grid communication, including authentication, Plug and Charge, smart charging, and future bidirectional charging scenarios.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For drivers, ISO 15118 can make charging easier because the vehicle can identify itself automatically.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>OCPI: Network-to-Network Communication<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">OCPI works above the individual charger level. The driver wants to charge at a station operated by Charging Network B. Without roaming, the driver may need to download another app, register again, add a payment method, and learn a new user flow.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">With OCPI roaming, the driver can use App A to access Network B\u2019s charging station.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Behind the scenes, the process usually works like this.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Step 1: Location Data Is Shared<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The CPO publishes charging location information to the eMSP. This data includes site name, address, coordinates, EVSE information, connector types, power level, availability, and operational status.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The eMSP uses this information to show the CPO\u2019s chargers inside its driver app.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This is important because roaming is only useful if drivers can discover charging stations accurately. If the location is wrong, the charger status is outdated, or connector information is missing, the user experience breaks before the charging session even starts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Step 2: Tariff Information Is Shared<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The CPO shares tariff information with the eMSP. This may include energy-based pricing, time-based pricing, parking fees, session fees, minimum price rules, currency, VAT-related information, and price conditions.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This allows the eMSP to display pricing information to the driver before the session starts.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For operators, tariff accuracy is critical. It normally includes the location, EVSE, connector, start time, end time, consumed kWh, tariff references, charging periods, token information, currency, and final cost details.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The CDR is not just a technical object. It is the commercial proof of the charging session.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">If the session data is incomplete, the tariff is unclear, or the CDR does not match the expected calculation, the eMSP may not be able to bill the driver correctly.
