Achieves OCPP 2.0.1 CSMS Certification: Why It Matters for EV Charging Operators

OCPP compatibility is becoming a more important procurement criterion for EV charging operators—but claiming compatibility and proving interoperability are not the same thing.

On August 21, 2026, Ampcontrol announced that its charging and energy management platform had received official OCPP 2.0.1 CSMS certification from the Open Charge Alliance following independent conformance testing by DEKRA.

The announcement highlights an increasingly important question for CPOs and charger manufacturers: how should businesses verify that an EV charging management system can communicate reliably with charging hardware?

What Does OCPP 2.0.1 CSMS Certification Mean?

OCPP defines communication between charging stations and a Charging Station Management System, or CSMS.

OCPP 2.0.1 expands the capabilities available compared with earlier generations of the protocol and includes areas such as device management, improved transaction handling, smart charging and enhanced security functionality.

Certification provides a structured way to verify implementation against defined OCPP test requirements.

According to Ampcontrol, its certification followed independent conformance testing at DEKRA and is listed through the Open Charge Alliance certification program.

Why Certification Matters for CPOs

For charge point operators, charger manufacturers and fleet operators, interoperability problems can create significant operational cost.

A charger may connect successfully to a backend while individual functions still behave differently from what the operator expects.

Potential problems can involve:

Charging profile execution

Remote start and stop commands

Meter value reporting

Authorization

Configuration

Firmware operations

Fault and event reporting

Transaction handling

This is why simply seeing “OCPP supported” on a product specification should not be the end of the evaluation process.

OCPP 2.0.1 Is Becoming More Relevant as Charging Networks Mature

Many charging networks continue to operate successfully with OCPP 1.6J, and that protocol remains widely deployed.

At the same time, larger and more complex charging networks are increasingly evaluating OCPP 2.0.1 as they require deeper charger management, improved security and more advanced smart charging functionality.

This means EV charging management platforms increasingly need to accommodate different generations of charging hardware.

Existing OCPP 1.6J chargers + New OCPP 2.0.1 chargers → One scalable EV Charging Management System

For operators with multi-brand networks, protocol strategy therefore becomes part of long-term software planning.

Certification Does Not Replace Project-Level Testing

Certification is valuable, but operators should still conduct project-level charger integration testing.

Real charging networks can involve different charger manufacturers, firmware versions, connectivity environments and business workflows.

When evaluating a CPMS or CSMS, operators should therefore ask:

Which OCPP versions are supported?

Is the backend OCPP-certified?

Which charger models have already been integrated?

How are firmware differences handled?

Can OCPP logs be viewed for diagnostics?

How are failed commands or offline chargers managed?

Can OCPP 1.6J and 2.0.1 chargers coexist?

What testing process is used before commercial launch?

TRENDPOWER Industry View

The Ampcontrol certification reflects a wider trend we see across the charging software market: interoperability is becoming a purchasing requirement rather than a technical afterthought.

For operators building multi-brand charging networks, an open charging management architecture can reduce dependence on a single hardware ecosystem and make future expansion easier.

At TRENDPOWER, we recommend that customers evaluate protocol support at three levels:

Protocol version — such as OCPP 1.6J or OCPP 2.0.1

Actual feature implementation — which OCPP functions are required

Charger-level interoperability testing — how the specific hardware and firmware behave in the real project

That is especially important for CPOs, charger manufacturers, fleets and international projects planning to operate multiple charger brands from one platform.

Need an OCPP-Compatible Charging Management System?

Evaluate your charger models, firmware, protocol versions and required operating functions before selecting the backend.

<p style="margin-bottom:
